I have been researching the little know 'climate wars' of WW2.  The Germans kept trying to establish weather stations in the Arctic and the allies kept trying to find them.  btw: the last Germans to surrender in WW2 were the operators of a secret weather station on Svalbard.

During his lifetime, Bernt Balchen was very famous in the USA.  He was the first pilot to fly over the South Pole.  He was involved in many Arctic and Antarctic endeavors and was one of the foremost Arctic experts of his times.  He is buried in Arlington Cemetary.

Here is what he said about Arctic warming in 1972:

Christian Science Monitor, June 08 1972
Ice-free Arctic Ocean near?
Ice much thinner Warning trend pinpointed
"a general warming trend over the North Pole is melting the polar ice cap and may produce an ice-free Arctic Ocean by the year 2000."

If they used Paypal then I would buy a copy of the full article.  As it stands, given what I know of Bernt Balchen's expertise and exploits, I would rely on the abstracted quote.
