2011-09-14 07:14:36Radio personality and denier Rex Murphy to lecture on Climate Sci 101 at U of Calgary
Stephen Leahy

Hope some science students show up and try to get a word in... FYI Friends of Science is Canadian denier group funded by big oil such as Talisman energy in co-op with the university - http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/Talisman+Energy+kick+started+climate+skeptic+fund/5396277/story.html?cid=megadrop_story

The Friends of Science is supporting The Frontier Centre for Public Policy
(FCPP) who will be bringing Rex Murphy to Calgary to address the student body at The University
of Calgary on Climate Change 101. The event will be held on Thursday September 29, 2011 at
Mac Ewan Hall. Admission will be free and the public is encouraged to attend.

We should get something out criticizing Rex Murphy's previous statements prior to this.

Wow, Murphy is choosing to rub shoulders with a group that is supported financially by the much discredited "Friends" of Science?  And why is he, a journalist, speaking to climate science? He is not even remotely qualified to do so.  Someone ought to complain to the University-- students do not need to hear this crap...maybe some can be encouraged to have their SkS apps ready to challaenge Mr. Murphys' propaganda.

Robert, this might be a good time to post a refutation of Murphy's recent diatribe in the NP (or was it FP), that we talked about.

Perhaps someone should bring this to the attention of the DeSmog Blog folk.

Maybe also Kate at ClimateSight - Haven't seen anything of her hear at the forum recently. She is in Toronto (I Think) but might have a more Canadian audience It would be good to get a few knowledgable people into the audience to ask hard questions.

If Murphy has a history of denial, some of us should harvest some quotes and links and add him to http://sks.to/skeptics. You can add his quotes and links via http://sks.to/monitor

The big question is why U of Calgary (invited?) a journalist to lecture on Climate Change 101.  Don't they have, you know, science professors there?  And then of course why the university and Murphy are associating with a denialist group.

Anyone got time to draft up a post on Murphy's past climate statements?  At least we've got 2 weeks before the "lecture".

*edit* seems like the university's own David Keith would be a much better 'Climate Change 101' presenter.  I wonder if he might show up to the 'lecture' to challenge Murphy's assertions.

DeSmogBlog's on it, like Oprah on a glazed ham.

I'm sure that Deep Climate will cover it also (he was mentioned in the Calgary Herald article) and Friends of Gin and Tonic reported on it a couple of weeks ago.

I'll be returning from Calgary on the 28th, so I'll just miss the talk. Don't think I'll change my flight just to hear Rex. Although I wouldn't mind staying for the Arctic Monkeys.

Added: Google throws up a lot of hits on Murphy and climate change

The Winnipeg-based "Frontier Centre for Public Policy" that is hosting the event has its own publications on climate change mostly reposts of garbage from elsewhere. Pathetic.

I would like to take an opportunity to write up something on this but I feel like it is important to have a good database of quotes and so on first. Prior to the lecture we should publish the article and I will forward along links to it to everyone applicable.

Wow, is that ever a rabid and abngry blog post that you linked us to @1 am Robert:  just one of many, many inane comments:

"Climate prostitutes, parasites and charlatans have been devouring billions in US taxpayer dollars, year after year, plus billions more in corporate shareholder cash, activist foundation funds and state government grants."

And this is the (ideological) group who is probably fincancing Murphy's talk at a University?

On an iPod right now, so just bookmarking these two articles - one, surprisingly, from Rex Murphy's "home" newspaper, which turn points to another's disclosure about "Friends of Science"... http://www.nationalpost.com/m/blog.html?b=fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2011/09/15/jonathan-kay-on-global-warming-the-climategate-shoe-is-now-on-the-other-foot&s=Opinion http://www.vancouversun.com/mobile/iphone/story.html?id=5405627

July 2009: Murphy promotes Ian Plimer's climate BS book:

...a wonderfully comprehensive and fearless book on the subject by Australian geologist Ian Plimer called Heaven and Earth: Global Warming - The Missing Science. If there are any willing to hear some truly inconvenient truths on the stampeding advocacy of global warming, Mr. Plimer's book is a collection of some of the sternest.

imho, anyone promoting that book should not be allowed within a mile 24000 miles of any seat of learning.

edit: Murphy gets a prominent mention in a guide to denialism posted at The Canadian Philosophical Association.
