Some interesting thoughts on communications to a lay audience:

Thinking you've communicated

Includes a lovely example of burying the screaming behind jargon, from NASA.

Tobis seems to think "honest" means the same as loading your poor reader with a probability distribution on every fine detail. It doesn't have to be that way: A good communicator can be terse, honest AND effective, all at the same time. You just have to have a clear idea of whom you're trying to reach. Then focus on what's meaningful and important to them.

Tobis is too pessimistic.

Tobis' mood is subject to natural variability, heh! He's been musing on this general topic for quite a while; if you dig back through his posts there are quite a few thought-provoking nuggets, often packaged in pleasing turns of phrase.
