Meet the Climate Sceptics

Monday, 22:00 on BBC Four

Filmmaker Rupert Murray takes us on a journey into the heart of climate scepticism to examine the key arguments against man-made global warming and to try to understand the people who are making them.

Do they have the evidence that we are heating up the atmosphere or are they taking a grave risk with our future by dabbling in highly complicated science they don't fully understand? Where does the truth lie and how are we, the people, supposed to decide?

The film features Britain's pre-eminent sceptic Lord Christopher Monckton as he tours the world broadcasting his message to the public and politicians alike. Can he convince them and Murray that there is nothing to worry about?

BTW, will probably launch Monckton Myths around 8am Tuesday Brisbane time which is the moment the documentary airs in England (Mon 10pm).

Am emailing the Guardian now to see if they might be interested in posting something about MM Monday night.

Good morning John :)

Just saw this.  Hope the timing works out.

Let me be clear, after wading through dozens of reports yesterday Monckton is clearly not a "skeptic" and most definitely not "pre-eminent", he is a charlatan and in denial about AGW and should be exposed as such.

I hate to think what BS Monckton is going to spout.  One can only hope that Murray holds his feet to the fire.  If not, I think someone should contact Murray and let him know about Monckton's propensity to lie and distort.

Yes, I hope Murray does a good job with this opportunity to expose Monckton, and doesn't screw it up!

From what I've heard (and I've only heard snippets), Murray is very aware of what Monckton is like and I do believe that will come through in the documentary. I'm very much looking forward to seeing it.

Re a "pre-eminent skeptic", I will revisit the preamble text on the Monckton Myths page and welcome suggestions/feedback.

Is this going to show up on the same BBC site that we were able to access from outside the UK?

Here's an interesting little tidbit.

Seems Monckton felt he was not treated fairly by the documentary.  HA!

Awww...  And it seems Delingpole is none too happy about the results of the documentary as well.

From Belingpole's articles:

"It seems that both myself and the Guardian have made a bit of a balls up and I now find myself slightly red faced."

Not the first time either Delingpole ;)

This is where you can watch the doco online. It's not there yet and I don't know whether it will be available outside the UK:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00y5j3v/Storyville_20102011_Meet_the_Climate_Sceptics/

If anything pops up there or on YouTube, please post it here. We're all very keen to see this doco :-)

In the film at the end, he admits he made a mistake when he lied about the IAU (sorry, 'misphrased').

This might be an approach strategy. Avoid any hostility or implications of intent, if he gets drawn into dealing with us, get into the technical points and get him into admitting he made a mistake.

Once he admits to 10, 20, 30... mistakes it will be easy to put together a piece that demolishes his credibility in the eyes of the public as well as those who have the scientific ability to see how stupid most of them are directly.

Idea?

2011-02-02 22:03:41Watching that documentary infuriated me

Just watched it and my overwhelming reaction: anger. Hearing Monckton smear John Abraham, cast aspersions about money, keeping an eye on where he goes on holiday, saying he's not an honest man. This is the same Monckton who proudly stated, "I don't know where my money comes from. I don't care where my money comes from."

Watching this doco fills me with a strong motivation to expose Monckton to the whole world. I know we've made a step in that direction with Monckton Myths but continuing the Monckton Myths blog series will be ongoing and indefinite and we should be vigilant for any new articles by Monckton and step on them hard and fast!

Fair enough: I recommend that we put other "programs" on hold while continuing to promote the current program on Monckton:

- responding on relevant comment blogs (both on SkS and elsewhere)

- doing any fine-tuning needed on existing Monckton-related articles

- working on any further responses that may be needed if we start to make an impression

Effectively, this is a war: we need to fight to win.

Carter Crocks and Lindzen Illusions will take some time to assemble anyway, so puncturing MMs will keep us busy in the meantime. But even after we launch CC and LI, we can always revisit MM whenever we need to.

Watched the documentary.  I know the skeptics are criticizing the piece heavily but it's really quite polite to Monckton.  You get the sense that maybe Monckton is starting to understand his shortcomings.  Maybe he's just going to become more hardened, or maybe it's just how the filmmaker edited it, but I got the sense he's starting to understand where he's wrong.

Think about it.  He's really got two points that are "his."  Dolomitic rock 750 mya (courtesy of Plimer) and the Pinker paper (where he didn't even realize Pinker was a woman).  Those were his silver bullets.  Those were the foundations of everything else he's built; how Monckton was going to save humanity from the leftists.  They've both dissolved into thin air.

I also think Abraham's critique was truly devastating to him.  Especially followed by the NAS piece.

They still claim they are winning this "battle" but I think the science is starting to catch some wind.  I like to credit a little of that to the hard work being done on SkS.

Thanks John!  Let's keep up the pressure.  The future is too important.

Folks, I don't understand why it was possible to view the BBC program with Peter Nurse directly without downloading and installing a hunk of software, but not for this one. Can someone explain to an old application-phobe?

I didn't need to install anything.

Go to the iPlayer website and search it through there. It should use iPlayer, which doesn't need you to download anything!

Neal...  I couldn't get the first link to work.  Downloaded and tried to install the additional software to run an .avi format on Quicktime (Mac).  Never worked.  I ended up using the second link, had to sign up and all, but watched the whole thing there.

I'm sure a youtube version is going to be out shortly.  The Nurse documentary showed up within a day or two.

All the copies out right now seem to suffer from an error that causes the audio track to get out of sync about half way in to the film.
