Tom,

Your post on the Weekly Digest comment thread re the deletion of a "chirhophoros" post by Rob Painting is totally uncalled for. If you have a beef about a Moderator's decision, you should address it in private, not in public.

I'm not sure what is going on here.  Can someone help me out please?

John Hartz:

1)  You yourself have criticized moderation in public before, and as they say, "People in glass houses ...";

2)  While I stated that I disagreed with the moderators decision, I made a point to indicate that their decision was understandable and rational.  I'm sure neither of the moderators concerned have any (Daniel Bailey and Rob Painting) are at all worried with the level of criticism involved;

3) (And most importantly) the purpose of the post was not to send a message to the moderators, but to our readers that they " ...should certainly not read into the enforcement of the comments policy on this thread any idea that his criticisms have simply been swept under the carpet. They have not been."  I cannot give that message in an on forum post; and

4)  You are a moderator, and if you have a problem with the post as moderation complaints, delete it.  Thas is certainly what happened to  chirhophoros's post, and the rules should be enforced impartially.

To conclude, I refer you to the related forum post by Glenn Tamblyn.  It has not recieved as much attention as it deserves, IMO.

I do not object to restoring the comments in question (they would still need some form of moderation); I just have not had the time to do so.  Regardless, it is nice to see this play out in gentlemanly fashion here, rather than in the public threads.

And I did not object to TC's advocating in the public thread, as I understand the manifold ramifications behind it.

I will attend to it when time permits.  Hopefully by tonight (mid-day my time here).

Tom Curtis:

I stand by my original objection to your public post.

BTW, When have I ever publicly crticized a Moderator's decision to delete a post?

JH -  the orginal comment was deleted by Yooper IIRC, not me. Chirpy posted another comment whining about the moderation - that's the one I deleted.

Just my 2 cents, but if the deleted comment is the one I thought it was, I too was surprised it was deleted, despite it being critical of application of the existing comments policy (on a thread about the comments policy).  I suspect others may have noted this too, and so it may be a good thing if it is called into question in public, as Tom has done - thus showing there is nothing to hide at SkS.  We should respond to reasonable criticism, even if the response is to demonstrate that the criticism is inappropriate, as may well be the case here.

Well the guy had a valid point, I just deleted his whining. Be nice if some of the regular commenters were somewhat more judicious in their choice of words. You can still expose these deniers as the tools they are without contravening the comments policy.

Rob, my deletion was the one being called into question, not yours.

Comment reinstated.

Note that the other comments that chirhophoros was tone-trolling on were already moderated out.  The restored comment was moderated to reflect that.
