Trolls often use the propaganda technique of quoting a few words out of their context, or posting clipped or otherwise edited images.  Further, such quotes or images are most often not accompanied by links to the original source.

A recent example is a clipped graph here:

My recommendation, for discussion:

Moderators could insert beneath the comment a full quote with context and/or the full image, with a link to the source.

The only comment needed would be, imo, "Source and original added for the convenience of our readers."

I am confident that the average reader will 'discern the moderator's drift'.

An example

Moderators may enjoy this fictitious example of some words taken out of their original context:

Joe Romm said that Morano plays with himself, but you never hear the warmists complain about that lie!

"For Marc not-a-mathlete Morano, “one or even 2″ is the equivalent of “several.”  For Morano, even basic math and simple word choice is twisted beyond the bounds of reason.  No doubt in the next version of the children’s game of Telephone that Morano plays with himself, he’ll claim that Latif is predicting a century of cooling."

Source and original added for the convenience of our readers.

Hoist with my own petard!

I should have posted that link myself.

Thanks, Daniel.  Sort of, grudgingly. ;-)

Hey, it was already your idea:  I've been travelling a lot the past few days.  I'd seen BP's mis-presentation of the graph much after the fact - after many others had commented on it - so had to wait until I got back into the office to do anything relevant about it.  Saw your post above & it dovetailed nicely with what I'd had in mind anyway.

That being said, we need to hold the denialist contingent accountable for this type of behavior.  Certainly, had someone pro-AGW done this the uproar would have been deafening.

Deafening in its absence was any decrying of this behavior by the denialists:  johnd did his usual weak defense of it, KL did his usual nowhere-to-be-found act, the minor players were simply AWOL otherwise.

Hide-the-decline indeed.

Appalling.

There's nothing like direct visual comparision - I edited DB's response to embed the image, allowing direct comparison:

Nicely done, John.  The relevation of trickery is immediate and - hopefully - effective.
