I've deleted those two trolling comments on your Prudent Path intro. Michael H Anderson is an obvious troll. Both his comments have nothing to do with your post. He's cyber stalking me by looking up where I live via my domain registrar details. There's ad hom and political ranting. Deserving of moderation on many levels not to mention I would hate for him to hijack the discussion on your PP intro. In fact, I don't do this often but I've disabled his user account - he obviously has nothing of value to contribute.

For now, the deleted comments and your response sit atop http://www.skepticalscience.com/comments.php?Action=Deleted

Yooper,

Good call to delete RW1's 'what their financiers are looking for' bs.  He's a real cute one.  Did you notice that he never cites a published paper?  Just ol' George and RW, trying to do the right thing against that greedy science establishment.

Thanks, muoncounter.  RW1's an obfuscationist.  He's one of several that I suspect of being aligned with the denialist 'bot-nets, as discussed over at Romm's place.

Doesn't take long on these sites to smell sincerity in a poster's comments...or the lack thereof.  Almost like denialists have a genetic fingerprint in their comments that flags them for what they are.  But to be fair to the lurking readership, we first have to give them enough rope to hang themselves with, which they promptly do.

Occasionally we've been spammed here enough that it takes the form of a "denial-of-service" attack.  So much regular commenter resources are taken up with dealing with the deluge that commenter/moderator burnout runs high.  Soon we will be hit with a structured, coordinated version of this by one of those bot-nets Romm speaks about & the threads will get flooded.

It's just a matter of time.

Anyway, back to the regular crew of sqeptics:  each time I have to resist the urge to press the SPAM button when deleting some poster's comments.  I remind myself that no matter how deluded some people are, some actually sincerely mean what they type & put effort into it.

Doesn't stop me from deleting violations of the Comments Policy; just from disabling their accounts with the SPAM button.

But I still smile when I press the Delete button...

I don't think we've ever been hit with a denier bot yet. Possibly because registration with a valid email is required before you can post a comment - no chance of an anonymous bot wandering on and spewing forth. Then when someone does go to the trouble of registering, if they're trolling, we just moderate them. So the effort to reward ratio is very high on SkS, hence the relatively high quality discussion.

Plus Doug who has looked at my PHP code describes it as "quirky", so it doesn't conform to the usual prebuilt CMS's that bots are accustomed to.

It would sure be nice to have an actual dialog of science questions among the actual contributors; we could all learn something.  These tag teams are doing their best (worst) to make as much noise as possible.

It's during the denier blitzes - witness the current Poptech, Chemist1 or HR onslaughts - that the true nature of the normal "skeptic" SkS denizens/contingent comes out: with the notable exception of Eric(Skeptic), all the fell voices fall silent.  No KL, no BP, nada.  Pin-drop time.

No skepticism of the "skeptics".

With Chris Canaris falling silent, I opine that Eric(Skeptic) is the only real skeptic left in the blogosphere.

The last of his kind.  Hail the glorious fallen...

RW1 is up to his same old tricks; its the Lindzen sensitivity thread all over again:  'Now you're saying that CO2 has one carbon and 2 oxygens?  I can't find a reference for that.'

Chemist is fizzling out.  These link dumps are a waste of time; I think that's all his posturing will produce.  It would be nice if hfranzen showed up to take him on.

And damorbel doesn't know how to use Excel?  You have to laugh at that one.

But  the surprise is protestant's new vicious tone.  I would have enjoyed hearing Ned react to 'Ned's ignorance'; where is Ned anyway?

I'm still betting that pirate will be back soon.

Yooper, the one thing that really saddens me is just how dumb most people are. That's an observation of my life experiences. One can rise to the top in a chosen field and still be a total buffoon. Now with Pirate, it's hard to tell. I have run across people who teach Earth Sciences at University level who are as silly as a two dollar watch, i.e rabid deniers.

We should form a fantasy denier league:  teams, stats, etc.

NQA may have pioneered a new tactic - the indignant 'how dare you delete my rant! Its responding to a specific point (however small) of a prior post.'  Perhaps something like 'complaints about moderation are automatically placed in the circular file' is in order.

Eff-em if they can't take a joke, that is.

Hmmm, I always thought a lot of these guys (why are they almost invariably men?) were just random cranks. But there seems to be some sort of co-ordination between them. Not that I can be bothered, but it would be straightforward to track their activities on the internet and establish a pattern. Might find they are either professional trolls, or in cahoots with each other at the very least.

Now we have Gilles, dissembler extraordinaire, making an appearance here at SkS.  His featured run at Real Climate lasted over a year, constipated dozens of threads and wasted the time of a hundred commentors involving comments beyond measure.

His orbit at SkS will be similar, now that he has discovered it.

He is the worst type of attention troll: the dread Vampyre Troll.  He will say less with more than anyone you've ever met; he will find more to disagree with based on absolutely nothing other than opinion and will attempt to suck in every passerby possible, derailing every thread he can.

Beyond that, all he has admitted to is being from a rural mountainous area in France, which is probably untrue.  I think he may be a pro, on a payroll of someone, to clog up whatever productive debate he can for as long as possible.

This kind will find no natural end.

OK, out of Bram Stoker ominosity.

Basically, the guys gonna be a PITA, and like a bad rash, won't easily go away.

I've been trying to figure out WTF this guy is trying to argue in the climate sensitivity thread over a dozen comments now.  I finally got him to admit that he's arguing that every single climate sensitivity study is biased high.  Of course he's given absolutely zero reason to believe that's the case.  I agree it's amazing how little he can say with so many words, and how much he can find to disagree with for no apparent reason.  He's just an obfuscator.  Reminds me of Judith Curry, the Uncertainty Inflator.

Interesting observations about Gilles: he offers not a shred of evidence to substantiate his copious opinon flow.  Would it be worth a more coordinated response demanding he supply some facts rather than just keep pumping out opinions?  I noticed that a group shunning of damorbel seemed to shut it up.

Baz (I always hear echoes from the Wizard of Oz in my mind: "The Great Baz will see you now...") was a comet that burned brightly for a time, but now seems to have gone dark, its inner fire extinguished.  Like Hale-Bopp.  At least he cheerfully acknowledged knowing nothing.

The demand for facts will simply feed into Gilles; numerous efforts at RC to get him to ante up facts merely fed the monster.  It's all about the attention with him.  That being said, his most egregious unfactualisms need to be exposed.  Perhaps composing our responses in a more generalized way, aimed at the silent readership instead of a rebuttal specific to Gilles would be more effect.

For example:

"Gilles has declared 2+2=5.  This is not so, as it can be specifically shown that 2+2=4.  This is not the first time that Gilles has declared an unfactual argument to be factual: examples can be seen (link to comment), (link to comment) and (link to comment)."

Airing out vampyre trolls' dirty laundry for public consumption is perhaps the best way to minimize their impact.
