I am thinking of writing a rebuttal to the constant use of a picture of the USS Skate, supposedly at the North Pole in 1959 among 'lots of open water'.

Eg.

Ice at the North Pole in 1958 and 1959 – not so thick

What would NSIDC and our media make of a photo like this if released by the NAVY today? Would we see headlines like “NORTH POLE NOW OPEN WATER”? Or maybe “Global warming melts North Pole”? Perhaps we would. sensationalism is all the rage these days. If it melts it makes headlines.

Watts brought it up again recently because the picture source has changed the date and he now believes the conspiracy is back at work again :

Is revisionism going on with the date of the famous USS Skate photo in the Arctic?

I am presently reading the Captain's book of the voyages in the Arctic and hope to get hold of a National Geographic article from the period, but I want to try to at least have a source here where people can look and see what the facts are, even if the photo above cannot be definitively proved to have taken place on any particular date. It definitely wasn't at the North Pole, though, so even having that as an article here would help, I think.

Any thoughts ? Would this be worth having ?

Definitely worthwhile debunking. Deniers are such lying pieces of shit.

Daniel, I've seen those posts from Patrick Lockerby (which have gathered a few of the photos together in one place) and also some at Neven's place. In fact, it seems that Watts @WUWT seems to think that the photo annoys Neven, for some strange reason - made even stranger when you see that Neven uses the above photo as a profile picture on his blog.

Anyway, I thought it might be an idea to try to set down a list of dates of the 19 surfacings of the Skate over its two journeys to the North Pole, and to try to match up photos with dates. Going by what is written in the Captain's book, there weren't that many photo opportunities, especially during the winter trip when the cameras kept freezing ! I reckon it's about time for everything to be set out in one place,  rather than as discussions at various websites using different photos, dates, etc.

You could be right, Rob P...!

Of course, Daniel, and thanks for the advice. I will probably get in touch with Patrick once I start to get something together - hopefully by this weekend.
