Contrats, Rob, on cracking the 1000 mark. Very impressive. I'm also impressed that Ari has managed to maintain his lead - thought he might have ran out of puff by now. I need that competitiveness for motivation - the only thing keeping me going sometimes is the prospect of ending each day 1 rating ahead of Dana :-)

Andy, how can you stop at 999? I'd just have to rate that extra one paper just to break 4 figures.

I'm going to be at a documentary film festival this weekend, so I'm going to lose my slot in the peloton and there's a good opportunity for the stragglers to pass me. I'll be refreshed on Monday, though!

"Peloton" is a new word for me - kind of. You see, it's a Finnish word meaning fearless but in English it's a new word for me. :)

Started a thread on the TCP forum, couldn't resist plotting the progress of the top 8 raters so far:

Even if Andy drops off the grid for the whole weekend, I still won't catch him at my current rate of progress (especially as there is other TCP crowd sourcing programming I need to do).

Indeed, am itching to see what the results say - but even more, cannot wait to see how our ratings will compare with the scientists' self-ratings. The more I think about it, the more important I think the scientists' ratings will be (I can't believe I was so skeptical about the idea when you first suggested it Rob - good thing you persisted with the idea).

Ari: "peloton" is a word used in bicycle races that refers to the bunch of cyclists who stick together to pace each other, sometimes in ordertocatch up witha breakaway leader. The English literal translation is "platoon" but we always use the French term when referring to cycling.

I'm really eager to finish and see the results too.  TCP really should make a huge splash, given the magnitude of the effort alone.  It's going to be the strongest evidence of the AGW consensus without question, and the most transparent, and lots of really interesting things we can do with the data.  It's an exciting project to be a part of.

And it's going to make the deniers pee their pants!  The consensus is their worst enemy, and TCP will be their worst nightmare.

I have to say, having read over 1000 abstracts now, I'm amazed at how few papers are actually skeptical.  In the three "skeptical" categories I think I've seen... maybe six total.  Only one got the most skeptical rating.  And even within the "neutral" category you can't pretty much tell that almost every one of the authors is writing from a position that they believe AGW is real.  It's truly overwhelming and eye-opening.

The other eye-opener is the breadth of research and in particular, the research into the many ways that climate change is impacting the environment. It's quite an experience reading through the range of papers. This is the kind of experience I hope to replicate for readers when we launch TCP by allowing them to read the papers and rate them themselves - not only by interacting, rating, checking against our results - but also just to look at all that research and get a sense of all the science.

I'm also amused by all the niche mitigation papers. What gas should we use in microwave plasma-torches? Which laundry detergent has the least impact on global warming? Every nook and cranny is investigated!

Wow, you guys are waaaaaay ahead of me.  I think I've got little chance of breaking into the top 8, though I did improve my position somewhat over the weekend.

I'm with John - it's fascinating seeing the stuff that gets researched.  Some of them are quite interesting.

I got one last night, though, that I thought was funny - I rated it as "Explicit >50%", because it *was* attributing all the warming to human GHG emissions.  It just claimed there wouldn't *be* much warming, asserting that the IPCC had grossly over-estimated climate sensitivity & feedbacks.  I had to look it up to see who the authors were - Michaels & Knappenberger.  I laughed out loud when I found that out.  :-D

It's amazing how many mitigation papers there are, on waste management, and CFCs in particular. There really are very few skeptical papers. It really will be just a few percent, low single digits, and most of those papers are more in the area of AGW is less powerful than most say, rather than saying its all the sun's fault or CO2 doesn't come from fossil fuels etc. This study should be devastating for the "no consensus" meme and will show just how isolated the denialist papers really are.
