I recommend that John Cook confer with Joe Romm about developing a coordinated strategy to deal with Dr. Roger Pielke S. et al. It would be eminently logical for SkS to paly the "Good Cop" and for Climate Progress to play the "Bad Cop." Our effort to set the Pielke record straight is going to be a long slog. We may slose some skirmishes here and there, but we will win the war if we perservere and out-think the opposition. The Force is on our side.

I too have told Romm, he seems far more interested in American politics right now-- as perhaps he should be the tea partiers and GOP are on the rampage.

Then again, he might engage John, so it would not hurt for John to try.

Would Pielke pay attention to Romm?

If Pielke Inc. pays attention to SkS, it surely must pay attention to Climate Progress.

Keep in mind, that in engaging Pielke Sr. we are really engaging a cabal of both Pielkes, Anthony Watss, and who knows who else. Thus, someone in the Pielke camp is undoubtedly closely monitoring what Romm says.

Well, all I can say is that if Romm ever tried to play "bad cop" to me, in the old Caltech idiom, I would tell him to TFFaRD.

Below id from Joe Romm's House GOP line up the usual disinformers for climate science hearing, John Christy and Roger Pielke Sr., plus a DDT-booster! posted on March 7, 2011.

The next day, Romm had this to say about Pielke's testimony:

Well, the testimony of Pielke Sr. — a complex argument delivered in lightning speed — would have been nearly unintelligible to any non-scientist.  A lesson in what not to do when you have five minutes to talk to members of Congress.

I will do a little digging to see if Pielke's testimony has been published. It is usually submitted in written form.

(My once and only expericne in testifying before a Congressional committee was very similar to Pielke's.)

Dr. Roger Pielke, Sr.
Senior Research Scientist,
Cooperative Institute for Research in
Environmental Sciences
University of Colorado at Boulder

RealClimate eviscerated Pielke, Sr. in an important post, “More bubkes.”  I discussed it at length here “Roger Pielke Sr. also doesn’t understand the science of global warming “” or just chooses to willfully misrepresent it.”  Pielke Sr. loves to cherry-pick climate data over short time spans to make misleading scientific claims about climate.  Climate, of course, is about long-term trends.

Pielke actually wrote in 2009 that the scientific observation that Arctic sea reduction is “progressing faster than was expected a few years ago” is NOT TRUE because of data “since 2008.”  One year.  Not kidding (and that was just sea ice extent, not volume, which looks to have kept declining).

Pielke Sr. continues to take very short term snapshots of just a piece of the global ocean warming data to argue (his emphasis), “upper ocean heat, in terms of its annual average, did not accumulate during the period ~2004 through 2009. This means that global warming halted on this time period. There is no other way to spin this data.”

Skeptical Science eviscerates his disinformation here:  “Pielke Sr and scientific equivocation.“  For the record, the key chart is

Time series of global mean heat storage (0-2000m).

SkS concludes, “Scientists like Pielke have a responsibility not to put dangerous myths into the hands of those whose interests are very different from that of the majority.”  Sadly, he’s almost certainly going to do just that in his testimony.

I'm pretty surprised that Romm has ignored our back and forth with Pielke so far.  It's the kind of thing that's right up his alley, and I even emailed him a preview of the 'One Sided Skepticism' post before it went live.  I'm kind of disappointed that while several "skeptic" blogs have lined up in support of Pielke, nobody has backed us up, except Eli posting a few comments in the One Sided post.

He basically took me to task for being too kind on Pielke. Am thinking about how to respond but I was leaning towards a "SkS doesn't do head-kicking Joe Romm style" (expressed much more diplomatically than that). Aka good cop, bad cop :-)

Neal, I hope you don't spend too much thought and energy on trying to reach Pielke. Sure, give it a shot but you have a more or less 2% chance of converting him from climate denier.

LOL well that's pretty typical of Romm - go for the throat!  Not our style though.  I offered him the chance to take the 'bad cop' road and he didn't take it!

All we have to do is to get Romm to read Pilek's posts on the comment thread. They will get his juices flowing.

PS -- A couple of hours ago, I sent him a request to get involved via his "Tip" feature.

JC:

It's not about trying to reach Pielke; it's about being clear to our readers (and maybe some of his readers) that we're open-minded.

But you know that.

wrt Romm: The Caltech expression I quoted expands to: "Take a flying eff at a rolling doughnut".

Romm is an unfriend of mine, based on how he handles his blog comments.

In terms of the war against the Forces of Evil, Romm plays the role of General Patton quite nicely. SkS cannot win the war on its own,
