I found another small window of time here, but that Pielke thread needs strict moderating.  At first I was OK with him waffling, but now it has gottent o the point of derailign the thread, and that is a no no.

KR and others have put him between a rock and a hard place....please do not let Pielke derail the thread.

Can someone else can step in for me and Dikran ASAP?

I'm going to wade into the thread & play Lizzie Borden (a whack-whack here, a whack-whack there...) with the most off-topic comments.

Objections, anyone?

Thinned out the thread a bit.  Played antibody with Pielke's ducking and weaving commentary style.

Sure I've pissed off lots of people on both sides.  Eh.

I am not happy about what you did. At the outset of this episode, Neal identified posts that he perceived to be inflamatory. He then asked each author to modify or delete those comments. We all complied. To me, that is a respectful way of proceeding. As far as I know, there are no "Super-Moderators" in the SkS system.

In fairness to Dan: I had a much smaller amount of material to work on, and things were not building up so fast. Also, I think more of Dan's folks were non-Forum people, that might be harder to approach; whereas nearly all of mine I could reach in a single posting, essentially privately.

To his credit, Bailey did strike through many of Pielke's initial posts.

On a technical note, the comments remaining in the thread that refer to prior comments by number are likely referring to the wrong number, or a now non-existent comment.

I just deleted the last two comments remaining from the batch I had posted becasue they were rendered irrelevant by Bailey's deletions.

Each SkS author who has posted a comment should review his/her comment to see if it is still relevant and whether or not it refers to the correct number of a prior post.

1.  I deleted none of Peilke's comments, nor did I snip any or edit them other than to strike out off-topic components (and then only after many comments were posted).

2.  I tried to be as sparing as possible with deletions.  However, comments that did not specifically pertain to the topic of the thread (apologies for those comments dealing with Pielke's goal-post-moving) were deleted.  I tried as best I could to renumber references within later comments to earlier comments that were thrown out of sequence by the deletions.

3.  I tried to give the thread a sense of fair balance in terms of making it obvious both sides were receiving moderation.  I think that is evident to the reader.

On the earlier thread on Pielke many months ago, Pielke demonstrated the same selective response pattern so often demonstrated by the likes of Curry, Watts, Goddard, Spencer, McIntyre, Fuller and Mosher.  I did not want to enable his trying to avoid dealing with the primary issue of the thread by letting comments through that would give him wiggle room.

If any were offended by my harsh treatment of your comments, I apologize.  It is far more important to defuse Pielke's effectiveness in the denial-o-sphere than to worry about egos being bruised.  Than being said, I did what I felt was best for SkS and the science, long-term.

Dan,

You are a very good moderator-- and I laud your goals.  This is a sucky situation-- you do the best that you can withouty fueling the "conspiracy" fires.

In this situation it is impossible to keep everyone happy.  Everyone please understand the moderators' predicament.

I think the difficulty of keeping the comment discussion under control is a good illustration of the inherent weaknesses of a many-to-one "take down" in real-time. You can give the guy a hard time, but you can't stop people from going off the wall.

Daniel, I have no problem with you deleting any of my posts.  However I am pretty sure that Pielke is incapable of admitting that he is one-sided in his skepticism.  I rather doubt he will ever criticise WUWT for the "Al Gore is an idiot" category, which as far as I can see is worse than "Spencer Slip ups".

Thanks Dikran.  And I agree that Pielke will never admit error or apologize for having instigated this as that would be anathema to his long-term behavior.  He and the other deniers (S&C, etc) are all cut from the same cloth in that regard.

That being said, the ultimate purpose of the thread was to air his dirty laundry out for public consumption & reprobation.

And I am always one of the first to admit being an error-ridden human being.

@ Rob P:

I saw the first Alien movie back in the '70s & didn't sleep for 3 days (Ridley Scott at the top of his game).  Ya almost took me back there for a second.

Alien

@ JH/B:

I dunno if it was the right thing.  I felt it was the necessary thing.  It still sucked to have to go to the lengths of what I did, but I couldn't let Pielke complain about unfair treatment (I gave him preferentially better treatment that I did SkS members).

Glad you guys understand.  Or are at least kind enough to say that you do.
