I was gobsmacked by that old footage where there's a bunch of kids playing in a swimmng pool and they're being sprayed with DDT, or something equally deadly, to prove how safe it was!

Yeah, those old adverts sure are priceless.

LYBRAND, Ross BROS. & MONTGOMERY did accounting and auditing for the American Tobacco Company in the late 1950s.

Perhaps couple it with a screenshot of http://www.petitionproject.org/ and a link to http://sks.to/oism and then it might be overkill but this graphic puts the OISM project in perspective:

John: great find!  I agree that the ad should be used in the weekly digest.

Rob: many thanks for that link.  That mine of information will keep me off the streets and away from bars for some time. ;-)

Without too much trouble I was able to rapidly find a direct parallel to many current denier arguments in a single article in the tobacco encyclopedia.  It rings many bells with its parallels to current contrarian claims such as the claim that, since we cannot prove that any single extreme weather event was caused by excess CO2, no event was caused by CO2 qed.

Well worth a read:

http://tobaccodocuments.org/industry_depositions/502742934-2935.html

"In summary, it can be stated that an unemotional and unprejudiced examination of the relationships between [ CO2 and climate ] clearly reveals that they are a matter of controversy; put very succinctly - [ fossil fuels ] can neither be incriminated nor exonerated."

The ad itself with a little stick figure in the right bottom corner (a la Oliphant) saying something like:

"25,000 cartons of cigarettes could buy a lot of "expert opinion" in the 1950s. How many barrels of oil does it take today?"

Other suggestions welcome.

Wouldn't it be great if we could turn that into Roy Spencer's face?

You may be suffering from Roy Spencer Fatigue Syndrom. Take two aspirins and drink lots of vodka.

I always remember a comment from Tiger Woods after he completely destroyed everyone in that first Masters tornament.  He said, "My father always taught me, when you get your opponent down... stomp on him."

Spencer deserves stomping.
