2011-08-25 11:27:10Is SkS actually a front for the IPCC with a team of professionals and PR experts?

Came into work at GCI today and was shown this article by Lubos Motl: http://www.climatechangedispatch.com/home/9319-john-cook-will-receive-lots-of-money-for-climate-propaganda My fave bit is the 1st comment which is a huge endorsement of all our collaborative work and Wendy's web design skills:

"I worked out recently it's impossible for one man to turn out a constantly updating and slick as grease website 'in his spare time'. I even went as far as to surmise he may just be a front for the IPCC or Globe International as it would need a team of professionals to create such a site and probably a few PR experts at the head."

I seriously cannot believe that anybody listens to Motl.  All he does is spew childish insults.  His readers must be children.  Where does he get this "AUD $240,000" figure anyway - is that the prize money for the winner?

We were wondering that too but my guess is that as there are 25 categories and each category gets $10,000, he must've done the maths. Maybe string theorists aren't too good at multiplication.

My competition for the Eureka Prize is the AYCC so I'm essentially going up against 60,000 AYCC members. Do they judge on a "per capita" basis? As Gaby said when I told her this, "ooh, you're in trouble!" Basically, I'm not holding my breath. SkS has a history of getting nominated but never winning (well, it's happened twice now but it is a 100% record).

BTW, another page predating the Lubos post:

The comments are classic. I think my new title will be "grand poobah of global warming alarmists". I wonder if I can get a GCI business card with that as my title :-)

Well, I think there is a perfect response, which is that you got an offer for a position paying you to do what you've been doing unpaid for 4 years.

But honestly, I'm not sure that this should even be dignified with a response.

Motl is probably just pissed that after having been fired as a Jr. Professor at Harvard, he can't get anyone to pay him anything to do anything.

I think there are 24 categories, but any one project can only be nominated for one category, so the Eureka is only worth $10,000 to a winner.

Sorry, John: You'll have to win a few more prizes before you can build the Poobah Palace.

It's very likely individuals like Motl can not understand what 'collaboration' means.

John.

If you are the Grand Poobah...

... I WANT A PICTURE OF THE HAT.

Sounds like something from the Flintstones

Forget the Penguins on the logo, houss about Fred, Barney and you in your hats.

I'd vote for that.

SkS is a slick as grease web site??

A lot of web designers run their own slick web sites, in some cases many.
It's a question of being organised, designing an easily maintained site and using the appropriate software.

This is amusing:

TOS: Avoid profanities/foul language. Stay on topic. No name calling, smearing, ad hominem attacks, etc... Threats are not tolerated. Long links are shortened but still work. Emails not shown.

Motl:

"Everyone who fails to see that Cook is full of **it must be a complete idiot."

I posted a comment pointing out the hypocrisy.

Nice compliment from the psychopath brigade.

And the other commenter brings up a good point. What did you do with your ears in that photo? :D

Mark - JC's just like Mr Potato Head, he forgot to put them on before the photo.

That blasted photo will haunt me to my dying days...

Andy Revkin asked me for a photo for a NYT interview so I got Wendy to quickly snap a photo with her iPhone. Then after the interview was published, Lubos Motl reproduced the photo and even his readers took pity on me, asking him to take it down. Someone then emailed explaining in great details why you NEVER take a photo of yourself with a phone from a close distance (something to do with the camera at close proximity warping your face, hence the missing ears). Definitely not one of my better moments and to other SkSers, if you start to get involved in media, consider me a cautionary tale! :-)

I assume it is the lens used that made the ears dissapear.

If it is any consolation, the photo of me on the departments noticeboard for several years when I first joined was far worse!  My ears would still be clearly visible even with an iPhone lens ;o)

I don't believe it can be the lens, it has to be the perspective: Distance from the face. You probably bring the camera lens very close to the face to "fill the screen", and so your cheeks block the ears.

For some reason that photo reminds me of the movie Men In Black.  There's something very alien about it.  ;-)

We could all pitch in and hire a real photographer to spend a day taking good photos of John.  He's a good looking fella, surely we can get some good photos of him.

I prefer the Mr Potatohead theory of JC.

Any other photographs are fakes, photoshopped by the establishment to make climate alarmism look like it's listening.

Funny.  You can see the problem with Windows as opposed to Mac right in that picture of Bill.

The problem:  Jeans vs Slacks.

Gotta go jeans, for sure.
