Patricia is a friend, supporter (of my environmental journalism) and passionate about climate change science. She told me she was going and I wished her well knowing a tiny, 68 year old Canadian woman was likely going to jail because of the tar sands. I'm not happy about that.

Neal is probably right - thousands will have to go to jail, tens of thousands will have to engage in civil disobedience.

"thousands will have to go to jail, tens of thousands will have to engage in civil disobedience"

It will happen, but sadly not just yet. Too many people in affluent countries are comfortable with their lot in life. That's going to change.

It will have to build over time. Kind of like the CO2 level.

I'm not in a position to fly over to DC to demonstrate; but I'm donating a bit of cash to the cause.

via email, Patricia points to Treehugger (we've been scooped! ;) ) where she tells her part of the story... as I understood it earlier, she's back in Toronto as of last Monday...

I also bumped into this mini-video that the TarSandsAction people posted of Patricia... notably she states that the climate implication is her number one reason for opposing the pipeline...

Anyhow, as Stephen Leahy notes above, she's very committed and ubitquitous on the Toronto scene. Nice little direct connection to the SkS community, though. I suspect it's not the only one...

She's wearing her SkS climate experts T-shirt in her mug shot!  I vote to use that photo in the weekly digest, badger :-)  Too bad most of it is covered up.

Heh, I hadn't noticed that! She wears the shirt often and it was one of the reasons I "tipped" John that she had been arrested. And I am sure it's no accident she's wearing it for the "mug shot". Bonus.

It's a shoutout to SkS, I second the motion to use it in the weekly digest.  Let's give a shoutout back.

Pic with the SkS shirt is great - even greater is her account of the arrest. Courageous stuff, inspiring!

John told me I was quoted on the forum but this is the first time I have seen it.

Being arrested in Washington gave me much more coverage than I ever dreamt of. I thought it would give me a chance to talk to friends and acquaintances ...but not the national media. I had a brief interview on a CBC current affairs program, and also quoted in an article in The Star last week. I wrote an op-ed for a newsletter but it did not get published.

rustneversleeps mentions a mini-video in which I was interviewed. I looked for that interview in the linked video but could not see it. Is that the right video?

BTW, I am going to Ottawa for a similar action (on the 26th). I haven't absolutely made up my mind to get arrested again but if not I'll be part of a solidarity rally.

It won't be so hot in Ottawa so I may not have the opportunity to wear the SkS T-shirt, but I'll take it with me just in case.

After Ottawa, whether you choose to go to the Big House or not, why not write a guest post here about the experience. Maybe it could be called 'The Ballad of Washington Jail'.

Stay Safe

I love the picture of the arrest, a beatiful woman in red looking far away straight in front of her, apparently foreseeing a future that the policeman can't see.
Thank you Patricia.

Well done Patricia!

In my view it is the duty of every citizen to oppose bad laws.  I could never understand the mentality of cops who arrest people at peaceful gatherings.  At risk of invoking Godwin's law, I must refer to the Nuremberg Principle which - in its widest form - states that wrongdoing can never be excused on the grounds of obedience to a higher authority.

As to the pipeline, why do they need to take the oil - ostensibly for USA consumption - all the way to the sea ports of the Gulf?  Remember: the oil industry has argued that if the USA doesn't buy the tar sands product then Canada will sell to China.  Question: to where will the oil be shipped from the Gulf?
