Deniers are predictably fawning over the report that we may have a new extended solar minimum.  Fox News said we may be headed for a mini ice age.  Feulner and Rahmstorf 2010 covered the subject (no more than 0.3°C cooling by 2100 from an extended solar minimum).  Anyone up for doing a post on this paper to debunk the 'heading for a mini ice age' myth?  We could even make it into a rebuttal to "solar minimum will cause a mini ice age", or something like that.

There is a problem with reading the popular science which apparently Mitt Romney has fallen trap to unfortunately.

Because just when the journalists decided that Global warming was here. We have all the articles coming out today which shows how schizophrenic the subject is.

Quiet sun: drop in solar activity may signal second 'Little Ice Age' on Earth
Sydney Morning Herald - Thomas Maugh - ?5 hours ago?
LOS ANGELES: The next 11-year cycle of increased sunspot activity, scheduled to begin about 2020, may be delayed and have a reduced magnitude - or it may not occur at all, researchers said. Three different lines of evidence suggest that the sun, ...

Claim: Sunspots to Disappear, Global Cooling May Ensue
TIME - Matt Peckham - ?5 hours ago?
You know what they say about a leopard not changing its spots, but when it comes to our sun, change is all but guaranteed. In fact new research suggests the sun may be on the verge of changing its sunspots in a way that ...

Sorry, circumvented our usual SkS peer review process because this one is fairly urgent and gaining great traction. I see the need for a strong, simple visual that everyone can use so I just published this blog post:

http://www.skepticalscience.com/How-would-Solar-Grand-Minimum-affect-global-warming.html

It's my hope that others will pick up on that graphic and use it elsewhere, similar to Dana's IEA graphic. In fact, that could be a growing role for SkS - developing simple, powerful graphics of current topics of interest. So keep an eye out for potential visuals SkS could create.

I borrowed from our existing rebuttal and a more detailed blog post to construct this new post. Should we redo the Basic Rebuttal to include the new graphic? It would be more relevant to current events then.

Damn John, that was quick.  Like cyborg quick.  Seems like a good idea to add the graphic to the rebuttal.

As the wise man said (I think it was Samwise Gamgee from Lord of the Rings), "praise from the praiseworthy is praise indeed".

In truth, I just rehashed my old blog post - but I could see the urgent need for a graphic, hoping it would do what your IEA graphic did and go viral (with luck, you'll get all the credit for this one :-)

Somehow I don't think I'll be getting credit for this one either.  If I don't get credit for my own work, I certainly won't get credit for your work! ;-)

I'd just discovered this news item on the ABC (who thankfully reported it correctly).

I think we should update the “We’re heading into an ice age” rebuttal.

Thanks for getting this sorted quickly, John. Useful for circulation purposes. As you can imagine, certain individuals are really making a meal of it up here in the UK too!

Cheers - John

Its always optimal to respond to these kinds of viral denier memes ASAP - then like Dana's IEA graphic, you find it goes viral too.

always funny when a denier states "there's a 100 year lag time to solar radiation." this would mean that the radiation would slow down to ~14m/hr as it enters the earth, if it passes through the entire earth ;-) . It's the same as the radiation induced cloud formation-thoery with delays like some 7 days times 5200 ;-).
