Seems like a pretty dumb move by Lindzen, Monckton, et al.

"That these characters are meeting up once again to thrash out these issues is no great revelation or surprise. After all, they wear their agenda with pride and promulgate it in the media and on the internet week in week out.

What is more surprising, perhaps, is that some of them are happy to accept the invitation of an organisation that has promoted intelligent design and seems to tread a very fine line indeed between fighting "Islamic fascism" and outright Islamophobia. Are these speakers happy – or even aware – of the company they will be keeping this weekend? Is it fair to assume they did their homework on this group before accepting their invitation to be flown to LA to participate in the event?"

{...}

"One of the AFA's three fellows is a highly provocative figure called Robert Spencer who has willingly stoked the "Barack Obama is a Muslim" meme, challenged the building of the "Ground Zero mosque", and runs a controversial blog called Jihad Watch."

Also speaking at the conference - Peiser, Delingpole, Horner, and Milloy.

Holy crap Dana.  Thanks for highligthing this.  Very disturbing-- Lindzen really is outing himself as an ideologue here.  Reading the comments made by apologists at the Guradian is equally disturbing.

Oh my, what a turnout. I agree with Albatross - they're showing their hand here, they'll no longer be able to claim they're not ideologues.

I doubt anybody thinks less of Lindzen than me, but even I'm surprised he accepted an invitation from this group.  Makes you wonder what the heck he's thinking.

Dana re what he is thinking-- I am of the opinion that he really does not give a sh1t any more, he has as the expression goes "gone emeritus".  But this may not new, what was he thinking when he testified in defense of tobacco?

Even skeptics need a group hug every now and then.

As a second thought on Lindzen, after the surprise, I wonder why he did it. We know that he, a former distinguished scientist (no irony here), has been marginalized for his stubborn denial. As Rob Painting says, even skeptics need a gropup hug. Or, if you do not accept the defeat you may wish to ally with anyone even vaguely on your side. A desperate and self-destructive move. I see on the same line the choice of publishing his paper in an obscure journal.

Lindzen is a closet believer in intelligent design?
