There's a reason why the overwhelming majority of webistes like SkS do not send an individual email notice each time a new article is posted -- most people simply do not like receiving multiple emails from a single source during the course of the day. I believe this is why the SkS distribution list currently contains leass than 1,300 addresses.

It's time to switch to an SkS Daily Digest.

Personally, I like the format of Science Blog's daily missive. It's simple and easy to use.

We very rarely do more than 2 posts/emails per day.  Not much difference between 1 vs. 1-2 emails per day.  I did talk to John about giving readers the option to sign up for the weekly digest instead though.  He said we'll work on that, assuming we can keep up with creating the weekly digests.

I have four SkS emails in my in-box that are dated June 8:

History Matters: Carbon Emissions in Context - 12:15 AM

There's no room for a climate of denial - 12:17 AM

Imbalance in US TV Media Coverage of Greenhouse Gas Regulation - 11:27 AM

Geologists and climate change denial - 9:37 PM

We live in the Eastern time zone.

Ah well that's just a time zone oddity, since the range is more than 21 hours.  The first two you list, John and I accidentally published posts at almost the same time.  Just a fluke.

it wouldn't matter how many articles are posted in a standard 24-hour period.

Dana,

I'll bet you a dollar to a donut that the maority of people on the SkS distribution would prefer to get just one email from SkS per day.

I agree with Badgersouth.

I have noticed that some websites give the reader an option of instant notification, daily notification, or weekly notification.

If that's not possible, daily notification would probably be most suitable for most people.

to produce the Daily Digest as well as the Weekly Digest.

Let's do a trial-run of a daily digest starting Monday and see how people react?

If we do a daily digest, I'd just add some code to make it automatic. I already have a daily script that sends any links over the last few days. This would be the same. Easy peasy.

So choices - offer many options or just switch over. I'm conscious of what techies call "feature creep" - bloating the site with too many options (the site is already bloating). Or maybe I'm just averse to the extra programming work :-)

I would think most people would be satisfied with a "daily dose":

- often enough to keep current, but

- not a continuing distraction to other things in the rest of your life

My web host are not happy about me sending 1300 emails at a time, several ties per day. So I'll set up the daily digest thing over the weekend.

"One small step for man,...."

I believe we will start to see an up-tick in the number of people subscribing to, and staying on, the SkS distribution list.

People will also be inclined to forward a daily digest to others.

Can the Daily Digest also be posted on Facebook? Does SkS have a Facebook page?

When we publish posts is there anything we need to do to get them listed on the daily digest?

Badger - yes SkS has a Facebook page (just search for Skeptical Science).
