I don't belive in these death threats but they clearly show the feeelings of some people. They think that scientists pointing to the risk of climate change may cause deeply unwanted political outcomes and this justifies the death threats.

Well Australia is moving closer to the possible reality of carbon tax implementation.  The denial movement, fossil fuel industry, and right-wingers are getting desperate.  Just look at Jo Nova's anti-carbon tax rallies.  I wonder if the media will tone down the rhetoric after this news.  I doubt it.

More details here. And talk about tone down.

Just despicable stuff.  I'm surprised it's happening in Australia rather than the USA, but like I said, the carbon tax is driving it.  I guess there's no reason to threaten US climate scientists since we're basically doing jack squat to reduce our emissions (other than EPA regulation, which is less political than a carbon tax).

Does not surprise me that now in Aus this is starting to happen with so much misinformation available to all on the internet. I work with two people who believe that 'big pharma' are holding off on cancer research to reduce population and make money out of research.

One follows David Ike , eats apricot seeds to prevent cancer and believes that America is going to have a revolution and he also followed the 'birther' issue. Through the internet he has been able to link up with other conspiracy nuts here in Aus and overseas.

Then there is climate change, one of them believes that carbon tax is part of a UN, one world government plan..... The other likes Alan Jones..

Now both of these people have been to Uni where they should have been exposed to critical thinking, yet I see very little in our discussions. So I can only imagine that there others in our community who are even more ignorant and prepared to go to extremes..

I agree with Neal.  And I strongly suggest that they get the police involved, sooner than later.

I suspect it is one or a a small number of people doing this.
It's like cases in the UK where town centres appear to have rampant thefts and graffitti etc. and it turns out to be one perosn doing it all.

Don't know how reliable this is but it has extracts from the emails:

Given the consistency of the language, I would say it was a small number of people.

What has Watts said about this?
Nothing I think.

Ove is a friend of mine and I knew he got abusive emails but I had no idea of the veracity or frequency of the threats or that they even targeted his home. It's shocking and my admiration for him has gone up - he is not cowed in the slightest.

BBC radio World Service interviewed a Melborne University climate scientist about abusive emails. Only caught the end of it so did hear the complete context.
