I created a graph of atmospheric CO2 during the last 500 Myr using records available in NOAA Paleoclimatology Program and in CDIAC. I used all available records that had annual averages readily available. I have the data in Excel sheet.

One thing that is very nice to see here is how seamlessly the proxies, ice core records, and in situ measurements fit in together.

Next steps:

- add the records that don't have annual averages

- do a sanity check on the records (for example remove parallel records from same site)

- add satellite records

- add other records not available in the two mentioned sources

Very cool Ari.

There's another co2 reconstruction going back 500 million years (I think by Royer) that I seem to recall being higher than this. Or did you use that data and I'm just remembering it wrong. The data is on some other thread here on the forum

Where can I access a reasonbale forecast of annual global CO2 concentrations under a BAU scenario?

See the IPCC CO2 data in my IEA post the other day, Badger. A1FI or A2 are BAU.

John - the data seems consistent with Royer 2006, which is the paper I think you are referring to.  It got higher around 500mya, which Ari's graphs shows - the data is scarce back then though.

The Royer (2006) data is included. Compare data points in the top panel in my graph to Royer (2006) Figure 1 - they are identical. Also included is data from Royer et al. (2001) but that only goes back to 58 Ma.

Ari did you see the work from UCLA (Tripati et al.) concerning CO2 level records?

Knowing Ari, he probably has the paper, but here's the linky to the data in XLS format just in case.

Data from Tripati et al. (2009) is included. There are couple of sources for really old CO2-data (McElwain & Chaloner 1995 and Berner & Kothavala 2001) that were not included because they gave RCO2 instead of pCO2. Now checking this I notice that for some reason I haven't included Pagani et al. (2006). I have to add that.

No worries Arie, I should have known those Tripati data would have been included...just making sure :)
