Hmm,

I do hope that all this stays here in the privacy of the Forum, I don't want SkS to be guilty of the same nonsense that Tony Watts and McItyre do--i.e., investigate IP addresses and then use that as leverage in the public forum and threads.

I am curious though, does his IP jive with info provided by Rob above?

SkS does seem to be attracting more trolls of late...so the Watts crowd is paying attention after all.

One of his comments just made me very curious.  He stated that he reads a great deal of research.  I've seen that guy around on other forums, though I can't remember where.  He does also maintain his own climate blog but my curiosity got the better of me wondering if he had any kind of scholarly background.  Apparently not.

This is not the kind of stuff I would ever flaunt against anyone in the comments.  But it does help to put the commenters words into some kind of perspective.

Daniel Bailey mentioned Colossus The Forbin Project in his moderation. Great film, the various TV channels in the UK show SciFi films, but they keep repeating the same ones over and over again. I wish they would show some of the less popular ones occasionally.

It's probably some 20 years or more since I last saw Colossus The Forbin Project.

I think checking out IP addresses is OK as long as it isn't passed onto other people, including others on this forum. IP addresses are private info held on a database and shouldn't be passed onto other members here.

Doing searches using Google and publicly supplied names/texts is a completely different matter, because it is publicly available.

I'm helping with moderating other forums and we regularly check up on the IP-addresses of new membership-requests. We for example use http://stopforumspam.com/ to verify IP-addresses where other provided information like User-ID and/or email-addresses look fishy or if the same or very similar IP-address is used multiple times. This has helped a lot to keep no-do-gooders out. All admins/moderators have access to the IP-information and it is apparent straight from registration that it will be stored.

2011-05-27 03:30:35Of course, I disavow all knowledge of IP checking...

@ Paul

Yeah, that was a classic and a fav of mine.  Probably haven't seen it myself in 30 years or so.  Wish JJ Abrams would give it a reboot.

Rob, Paul and Baerbel,

Sorry Rob, you did not investigate hi IP, just some Googling.  I' OK with that.  Gosh, I was the one curious about whether or not his IP address was consistent with the details provided by Rob.

I agree about using IPs tracking to keep the no gooders out-- Gilles was a classic example and that kind of poster/troll has to be kept out so as not to detract form the scientific discussion.

It is that I have noticed IP mentioned by the moderators and I was cautioning that such information should not be shared, especially on the open threads.  I also do not think it a good idea to advertise that SkS are looking at IP addresses.

Anyhow, it seems that we are all in agreement.  My apologies again Rob if my post gave the incorrect impression.

Perhaps the registration form could show a disclaimer similar to what we have at the Rfalconcam-forum:

"Please note that with each post, your IP address is recorded, in the event that you need to be banned from this forum or your ISP contacted. This will only happen in the event of a major violation of this agreement."

We also show a detailed agreement on the registration-page:
http://rfalconcam.com/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=ce6taajsh63re0ann14pi02891&action=register

From what I know, this is pretty common both on forums and blogs, so we could just as well do something similar for SkS. Folks would need to agree to these terms prior to registration.
