Dana and I had a contest to see who could get through an interview with the least number of ums and ahs (we're working on being better public speakers). The loser had to buy the winner a drink in December (if we can both make it to the San Francisco AGU).

So Dana had his very first interview with Dan Moutal on Irregular Climate and I just did an interview with The Climate Show this week. I've listened to both interviews last night and counted the ums and ahs and the results are in. My methodology: I timed from the moment we first spoke to the moment of our last word as the duration of the interview (I wasn't going to go to the trouble of counting only when we were talking - too much work!)

Dana started a little nervously in his first interview, beginning with a flurry of ums but then he grew in confidence and made it through the rest of the interview fairly flawlessly. The result: 0.5 ums per minute.

I started okay but unfortunately was consistently umming and ahing throughout the interview - particularly when trying to explain what causes the tropospheric hot spot, lapse rates, etc. The result: 1.9 ums per minute.

So Dana wins hands down. If it was closer, I might contest the result, claiming Dan Moutal speaks so slowly, that gave you an unfair advantage. But the difference was too big, I concede defeat. Congratulations! First interview too :-)

So double or nothing? Dinner at AGU?

Woot woot for me! You're on for double or nothing, assuming I do another interview at some point. I imagine I'l be less nervous next time.

Them's fighting words. You're on, Nuccitelli!

By the time we get to AGU, I'll probably owe you a small car.

John,

Better be careful: I remember a strange game someone played, to see how he could trade up from his initial investment, by doing internet exchanges. Over a period of a year, he got as far as a house; starting with a paperclip.

No need for a car. A new electric moped will suffice!
