Hi all,
If ECMWF is correct, a TC or TS could affect the N. Island of New Zealand next Monday. Yes, I know, a full week away so full-on caveat emptor, but ECMWF has been quite consistent showing a storm (or one undergoing extratropical transition) affecting NZ. Anyone here aware when NZ was last hit by a TC or TS?

Alby, 1987 or 1988 if I remember correctly - Cyclone Bola. Caused a massive amount of damage. My fingers are crossed that they are wrong because I live in the Northern tip of NZ - where storms often track.

Alby, had a look at a local weather site run by a Wellington University guy, it's normally very accurate and I use it when I'm heading out for a dive or spearfish. They predict what look like the remains of a cyclone tracking nor' east of NZ in about 7 days time. I hope they're right, but much can change in 7 days of course. Local surfers will be happy, it'll pump in some mighty big waves.

Hi Rob, Many thanks. Interesting-- wow, so about 20 years ago. I hope the storm stays well of shore. Probably worth keeping an eye on-- the storm is just starting to spin up now near Vanuatu. Sigh. Spear fishing and diving...lucky you. Sounds like you live in a beautiful part of the planet.

Sounds like you live in a beautiful part of the planet. Yup, and I'm enjoying it too before it ends up in the dumpster, like most other places. Here's the forecast map.
