John Cook

People often ask why are skeptical climate scientists still skeptical with such a consensus and so much evidence. The answer is complicated but a major factor is their free-market, right wing ideology. So I've been curious about what scientists like Spencer, Christy, Lindzen have said about their ideology in the past. If anyone encounters such quotes, please post them in this thread (and provide the source). Here's the first:

"I view my job a little like a legislator, supported by the taxpayer, to protect the interests of the taxpayer and to minimize the role of government."

Roy Spencer
(first came from Quark Soup)

I thought Spencer's job was to analyse satellite measurements of the atmosphere and improve our scientific understanding of climate - but no, in his mind, it's to minimise the role of government.

In an email to Media Matters, Roy Spencer:

"I love Fox News"

By the way, the rest of the Spencer quote noted in Quark Soup is pretty revealing as well:

"Nicholas, I would wager that my job has helped save our economy from the economic ravages of out-of-control environmental extremism.

I view my job a little like a legislator..."

Note the subject of the post:

"I’m pretty excited that today (Independence Day, 2011) is the release date for my new book, Fundanomics: The Free Market, Simplified."

Spencer wrote a book on free market economics?  WTF?  In other comments on that post, Spencer argues that we should eliminate social programs and replace them with the private sector passing out donated money to those in need.

"since government is so inefficient and wasteful, more poor people would be helped if charity was coordinated by the private sector. Americans are extremely charitable, even after the heavy tax burden we have."

I can see why Spencer loves Fox News.  He's a right-wing extremist/libertarian.

Heavy tax burden? Among first-world countries, the US has a very low %age tax burden.

Yeah that was my first thought too, neal.  Hence my comment about Fox News, which is likely where Spencer got his ignorant opinion otherwise.  He just hasn't got a clue, but I'm glad he's revealing his ideological biases.

Seriously, how old does he think the Earth is? I know he's an Intelligent-Design-er.
