Glen, that's pretty much how I arrived at the shorter version.  But inspired by your comment, I added literal 'chapter (really 'section') headings.  I think those address your concern somewhat (as well as earlier comments on the longer version) by making explicit the organization, and helping the reader maintain focus on where the discussion is going. (If nothing else, they at least help break up the text blocks a bit!)

I've also added the hyperlinked references suggested.  They've been checked and, in several cases, debugged.  But please feel free to recheck any and all!

It's still quite long, but that's okay.  Looks good to me.  Let me know when you're ready to publish and we'll put it in the rotation.

Andy's suggestions have been implemented (and a hat tip to Dan for assisting with the formatting.)  I think it looks good!
