Sooooo, did others at the shindig measure up to your expectations? I don't mean that in a negative way, but did you have some sort of mental image of what they were like (based on communicating here & elsewhere), and find out it was way off the mark?

Any snaphots from AGU?

Sorry, I probably should have brought a camera, but didn't.  A photo of the poster session would have been impressive.  John was lamenting that he couldn't take a photo of the Golden Gate, too :-)

I pictured Michael Tobis with a southern accent, but he's originally from Canada and didn't have one.  Somehow I thought Rob Honeycutt would be older too.  And I was surprised that Kate has a stutter, given what a great communicator she is.  But I didn't have too many expectations really.

I'll probably post this tomorrow.  Not too much to comment on, but if anyone has anything, get your comments in.

I spent quite a bit of time with John Cook at the meeting, where, as Bud Ward put it, John was treated like a "rock star." During the ceremony in which Richard Alley received the Stephen Schneider award, Alley said that SkS was his Web site of choice, and Bud, who presented the award to Richard, said the same thing. People who had never met John in person (almost all of us) greeted him with admiration and gratitude. It says a lot about John that the first words out of his mouth after the award ceremony were, "Wait till I tell the gang at SkS about this recognition." It was not about him, it was about us.

John also gave several articulate presentations and answered questions well.

I had not attended an AGU meeting in about 40 years. I was astonished overall but in particular by two things: 1) the event has grown so huge that someone said there was a training session on how to navigate the meeting, and I believed them. 2) If you include all the presentations on the communication of climate change and the research papers that dealt with climate change, I believe it is safe to say it was by far the dominant topic of the meeting.

The get-together at Rob's was great too. Jeff Masters and Peter Sinclair, two of my heroes, were there along with many others. His wife makes great sushi!
