In response to Pielke and WUWT taking climate scientists' quotes out of context to argue that the science is not settled, and that they're just making "excuses".

Great!

Obligatory nit-pick:

El Niño and La Niña are cycles which cancel eachother out over the long-term.

El Niño and La Niña are cycles which cancel each other out over the long-term.

Thumb!

I feel a lot more relaxed with the book loon now it is accompanied by your excellent dissection of settled science.

I still think it should be put out separately as Loon of the Week though – will give it more exposure.

My suggestion for title would be something like “Cloud of Uncertainty obscure the Settled Science”.

Oh yeah it will still be the toon of the week Brian. Good title suggestion there too - definitely something we can work with. Obscuring the Settled Science Under a Cloud of Uncertainty maybe? Or maybe work 'Tragedy' into the title in keeping with the Trenberth quote?

dana - maybe "Uncertainties tragically confuse the Settled Science"?

The first figure has a science myth in it. The fact that Earth is round was established far before 1600's. There is a myth that Earth was thought flat before that but it is not true. It was known already in ancient Greece that Earth is round.

I don't think that is what the cartoon is implying. A few of us know about Eratosthenes.

I would urge caution putting uncertainty and settled science in the title together.  People get confused and think you mean the science is not settled, especially if they only hear the title.  Perhaps "Settled science does not mean there is no uncertainty".  Examples of uncertainty in other settled sciences could be used in the introduction.

Excellent post and a good reply to WUWT.  Dr. Pielke has shown his stripes.

Good point Michael.  How about keeping it simple, like 'Sorting out Settled Science from Remaining Uncertainties'?

Well, I like it except it puts the emphasis on the uncertanties.  If the post focused on Curry it would work, but the target is a mainstream audience (i.e. TreeHugger), who won't be familiar with the term "uncertainty monster".

dana - whatever title you use I think "Robust" should be put in front of Settled Science. Maybe you could use it in the article as well.

Looks like this one is good to go other than the title. I'll figure something out and publish it shortly, because my 'hide the incline' post references it, and that one is time sensitive.
