Cick here to access (via Accu Weather) a NASA Video Animation of the 2011 Arctic Melt Off. You may or may not want to incorpoarate it into your article.

Peter.

Several small things. The PIOMASS in the caption should be a link - more intuituve than the link above. Also I would highlight with a line or two what is on the graph - Its volume, not volume Anomaly which people often confuse so the zero at the bottom means NO ICE AT ALL. And the maximum volume now only goes as high as the average volume 30 years ago.

John, Many thanks, I have raided the NASA animation site and yes will probably add it to a post, probably the extent one being more appropriate.  Hoping I can update the other movies too.

Glenn, Will change the link, this makes sense, and agree with your emphasising the No Ice At All message.  Thanks.

Glenn, added your suggestions and updated the volume chart, needs a snappier ending though.

Dense post, but good.  I made a few formatting and other minor edits.  You might consider adding the NSIDC sea ice age figure when you talk about the oldest ice declining:

NSIDC Sept

NSIDC Arctic sea ice age from 1983 through 2011 (Source)

I've got this post on the schedule for publication towards the end of next week.

I never like to see a whole lot of effort go to waste, if no one else is going to offer any further input, here's my thumbs up.

Thanks all.  I could include the Sept Ice age chart, it's quite good.  I'm hoping to get an updated movie from Maslanik and Fowler, any day soon.  I've also looked at some of the other Ice volume models, but will deal with these in the comments, if we get any!

Pete, you'll get used it. It's a common problem when herding cats.

I think the NSIDC Arctic sea ice age figure would tell a clearer story if the values were multiplied by the extent, so that you get a total area of ice of a given age, not a percentage.

I'd want to read up on the data carefully (or ask an NSIDC expert) before presenting such a graph though.

How about:  From Maslanik 2011, not as colourful, but is actual extent.

How about something like this from Tamino:

ASI

"every day this year has shown a lower volume than the same day for any previous year"

The ´╗┐Maslanik graph is great, and one which is seen less often than the NSIDC one.

I've added the multi-year ice extent chart above.  The update of the ice age movie from Chuck Fowler is still being quality checked, as the amount of "false" first year ice appears to be higher this year on the processed satellite data.  I'm guessing this will take a while to sort out, so probably go ahead.  I'l look again at the ice extent post but will have less time over next few weeks!  Thanks again for all the comments.

I've got this on the schedule for publication this week if you're okay with that Peter.  Let me know if you'd prefer to hold off for a while.

Hi Dana, I think it's ok to go.  I'll try to get a text box with links in to these (not done that before though!).
