I appreciate this is probably too long for a blog post: The Canary in the Coal Mine. It's intended to be the advanced rebuttal to Arctic ice is recovering, but I couldn't resist throwing in a heap of updated keynote references on a bunch of other stuff. See Church and White 2011 on balancing the sea level and energy budget for example.

Feedback so far on (advanced post) is that it's too long, as suspected. Enthusiasm running ahead of sensibility.  Have added headings to break it up, but I don't want to lose the handiness of a heap of significant very recent references in one post.

This is one of those posts, that you want to read - but don´t have time to because of length. I don´t have suggestion about the content (since I haven´t yet have time to read it). But it is more likely that people read this if it is in two parts (which I don´t know if is possible).

Peter, if no one reads it, it doesn't matter how handy it is.

Neal, fair point, I will be guided by your wisdom in all things blogworthy. All I can say in feeble defence is that it's the sort af article I'd want to read also. Does no-one read to the end of the papers we all cite? Anyway, in this world of shortening attention spans it should prove possible to break it up a bit, which I'm already thinking about.  I thought from the start the thing is too long for a standard post but thought I'd chance it and see the response.  There is a sort of shorter version here also.

Peter,

Tests done over the last 10 years proves pretty convincingly that the operational attention span of people who use the www has dramatically declined over time.

I shamefully admit to recognizing this fault in myself.

But we are trying to promote understanding: We have to go to our audience, we cannot expect our audience to go to us. "If the mountain does not go to Mohammed, Mohammed must go to the mountain."

Agreed, suggestions of break points anyone? Probably between the extent bit and the age of ice bit.

Re-written, cut down, re-named: The Unrelenting Decline in Arctic Ice. This is on extent, the key chart is historical extent inverted hockey stick. I have seen my first version of this chart around on the web so it is doing its job. Will post other parts of original too long draft article relating to Ice Volume in new post, but won't have much time after this week.
