A little context; I am a 23 year old environmental scientist, studying Science Communication in London. I'm currently running for a Bloggie (2011 Weblog Award) in Best Science Blog, chiefly against WUWT, as the other nominees aren't actively campaigning. I know I stand little chance against the WUWT horde, but John has kindly offered me a guest spot on SkS as a platform to gain some attention. Note: I'm not sure if this post is too personal for SkS; I am trying to raise the profile of my Bloggie campaign, but also think there is a lack of young voices in science blogs in general, and especially in the climate debate (having read the Author Introductions thread, I see there's a handful of youngsters, which is great, but it's nowhere near in line with actual demographic representation). For many in the current blogosphere, the climate debate is, arguably, one step removed: they can be right or wrong, but they are unlikely to see the most dramatic effects of action (or inaction) now. Plus, there is an age barrier to joining the discussion - it's unrealistic to expect a 15 year old to have the breadth of knowledge, writing skills and time necessary to do so. Those under 25 now would be reasonable to assume they'll live to at least 2050 and possibly decades more, with climate impacts growing more severe over time, so we need to start encouraging them to contribute a vision of what they want in their future. That's the thesis I'm trying to push; here's my attempt. Any thoughts/feedback/criticism much appreciated.

I have voted for your blog. But I think what we really need is a Tahrir Square for CO2.

How does a turd like WUWT get nominated for best "science"blog?. Doesn't instill much confidence in the vetting procedure from the get-go. Voted for your blog too David.

This is good, David. You have great story telling abilities, no wonder you got nominated. Let me know when you've come up with a headline you're happy with and I'll post this (don't take too long, the sooner we can start getting you votes, the better).

Thanks for the comments and votes! John, if it could go live monday PM Australian time, that would be great - it'd be morning UK and early morning US time so it will kick off the working week! I am going to try a few more avenues of publicity tomorrow too so hopefully I can gather a second burst of momentum, the first has dwindled a little. I've done some minor edits and changed the title, too.

Here's the final post: http://www.skepticalscience.com/I-want-to-earn-my-future-not-inherit-it.html I'll publish it Monday night which will be early UK/US Monday. In the meantime, you can still edit the blog post, just look for the edit link at the bottom of the post. Do you have an idea of voting results?

I'm impressed David, you're a really good writer. I have to echo Rob that WUWT being nominated gives me major concerns about the bloggies. Seriously, WTF? Anyway, I don't have any comments. This is ready for publication. If you don't get to it John, I can publish it in the morning.

Thanks John, looks good (though I'm not used to posts without photos, haha...) I haven't been able to figure out if the poll results are made public; I hope they will be after it closes.

Hey David, Nice to see another young person entering the fray. I think you might find Kate's climatesight website interesting too. I think unfortunately WUWT has been plugging this thing for a while. I hope that they don't have their trolls working too hard... |
