2011-06-07 13:16:23The Skeptical Science Team - you can add yourself to this page now
John Cook

john@skepticalscience...
121.222.9.229

I've thrown together a Skeptical Science Team page:

http://www.skepticalscience.com/team.php

Whether you wish to be listed on this page is entirely voluntary. To do so, you can edit your profile directly via the Author Admin:

http://www.skepticalscience.com/admin_author.php?Action=ProfileForm

Tick 'Display on Team Page' to add yourself. Also recommended to add a photo and bio. For consistency, recommended your photo is 150 pixels wide x 225 pixels high. If you need to edit your photo to get it to that size, I'm told Picnik is a good photo editing website (my 11 year old daughter uses it extensively so I'm sure we can all manage it).

Note - this page is still being developed so feedback is welcome to improve it. I'll probably wait to see how the page looks when others have added their details, to see how the page shapes up with lots of names.

Other possibilities are having two forms of bio - a short one-liner and a more fuller version. So the Team page only shows the one-liner then you click the link for a full bio. Or maybe people have other ideas. Am open to suggestions.

When there's a general consensus that the page is good to go, I'll do a blog post launching it (this may wait till Robert gets the map thing going too).

I'll do it (as soon as I can locate a photo that didn't break the camera).

Daniel studied Earth Science, Cartography and Remote Sensing at Central Michigan University in the United States.  After graduating, he took employment with the US Department of Defense in Washington, DC, for many years.  Daniel is currently employed in the pharmaceutical industry, where he is much happier.  No doubt due to the meds.

Cropped it a bit though - otherwise you get too small when its shrunk down to 75 pixels wide. Cool to see a pic of you and I like the bio, nice bit of humour. So you're now listed at http://www.skepticalscience.com/team.php

I just checked it.

Still no pic though (and the bio could be fleshed out some more). Do you get an error message when you try to upload it? The upload feature on the server is a little patchy - sometimes works, sometimes gives an error.

Hey John,
here's my first draft of the Map

Regarding my profile. The problem was it wouldn't work everytime I tried to upload a photo. The photo have to be exact specifications?

Im the dot on the eastern coast of Canada (going to grad school there!)

Any thoughts on the map?

Oh, must be the other Robert who's British, eh?  (I threw in the 'eh' just so you Canadians could understand me).

The map looks good.  We need more points though!  Plus not all points will be authors necessarily (i.e. if we can get some translators on there).  Maybe 'SkS contributors' would be more accurate.

Have added the map to http://www.skepticalscience.com/team.php - anyone who isn't there yet that doesn't mind being added (noting the map is very general, doesn't get specific), please post your general co-ords for Robert to add you.

Especially the Aussies - need more Aussies there. James?

Robert, you probably should add one dot for Perth, Australia - for Steve Lewandowsky who regularly posts here but doesn't frequent the forum.

Re your photo upload problems, no, the photo doesn't have to meet exact specifications but it does need to be a JPEG. What error do you get when you upload?

If anyone has a problem with their photo, just add their bio to the profile and email me the photo (john@skepticalscience.com) and I'll add it.

I was using a PNG (didn't know it hadda be a JPG); wouldn't take my bio either (not that it matters, as I'm now beyond the golden veil where the shield maidens dwell...).

I was using png too. it should work if i re-do it then.

Regarding coordinates.. I don't need them. Just city name and country. I look up the coordinates myself from that.
I will try to add it for Steve Lewandowsky. Am I missing any others who would want to be?

John Cook

john@skepticalscience...
121.222.9.229

Should we add translators to the map? Have them on same map or separate? Distinguishable from authors?

Would be nice to include translators on the map (if Robert doesn't mind the extra workload) as it would then broaden the distribution, show contributors all over the place.

Either add them with red dots and rename the map to "contributors" or use another color for their dots.

I'm not sure how many translators frequent the forum(s), so we should perhaps send out an email to the known ones.

2011-06-08 14:52:12I'll send an email to all translators

Anne-Marie, don't you dare think about removing yourself from the team page. I'm loving seeing pics of all the authors and I encourage others to add yourselves. It's great for the SkS team to see each other, get to know each other a little better, and I think it will help our communication with SkS readers as they get to know us too - knowing the author does have an impact on how people process our information.

Riccardo, don't suppose you could email me a larger version of that pic - I'll crop it down so you're a little larger in the thumbnail.

Hi Robert,

you can switch "my" dot in Germany to whatever color you select for translator. Assuming you make the distinction by color, you could also show two color-coded titles: one for authors in red and one for translators in the other color.

I sent an email to the folks who have helped with the German translations and will forward any feedback I receive from them.
